Cat Lamp Shade

For Industrial Design (Alternate Media), at Sheridan College, I made a lamp shade.

The assignment was to use sheets of mylar and design a hanging lamp shade for someone much older or much younger than us. My design was inspired by my niece, who loves cats. A prototype was made out of craft paper.

My initial idea was to cover it with small squares of toilet paper, to simulate fur. But when I got to covering about 80% of the cat, I decided that the toilet paper was obscuring the clean lines of my design, so I removed it all.

Industrial Design is fun. Too bad so much of it is made out of petroleum-based materials. The planet is dying, and I would rather not use plastics if I don't have to. Even metal has to be mined, and mining destroys environments. Hopefully someday people will invent materials to replace plastics and metals. In the mean time, I'll stick to wood. Blah, blah, blah.
