Coffee Table

For Furniture Design and Fabrication, at Sheridan College, I made a coffee table with storage.

The project was to design and fabricate a coffee table with a surface no larger than six square feet. It had to contain some type of storage (drawer, shelf, compartment), and had to include at least one veneered element. The materials were limited to 4 board feet of 8/4 cherry, 10 board feet of 4/4 cherry, 3/4" particle board, and cherry veneer. For joinery, we were encouraged to use the newly learned biscuit joint

I started by making sketches, then digital models, then 1:4 scale models. The overall dimensions were: 35 1/8" long, 21 1/16" wide, and 16 1/6" tall. Because my initial design exceeded the limit of solid wood, I had to change the design of the drawer fronts.

The coffee table is made of solid cherry, cherry-veneered particle board, and Baltic birch plywood. The drawers run on wooden slides. For the finish, I used a black wood wax, and a clear coat of hardwax-oil.

This was my first time making drawers - so it was amazing when I put them in for the first time and they fit perfectly. "I love it when a plan comes together".

This was also my beginning of realizing how to do a decent finish. I'm very pleased with how silky smooth it came out.

Even though I made a ton of mistakes, overall, I'm happy with the coffee table.
