This kitchen cabinet was installed with a hideous 6-inch gap between the cabinet and the oven, and I wanted to either hide it or make use of that space.

I used SketchUp to design the shelf, and also to figure out how I would make use of the material I had.

To get the screws to hold better in the end grain of the plywood, I put plugs into plywood for the screws to hold on to. I drilled a 5/8" hole into the plywood using a Forstner bit, and plugged it with a 5/8" wooden dowel. It's painted over, but you still see circles where the plugs are.
